About CromWell

Cromwell joined Parliament in 1629 and became particularly active during the Civil War, opposing the absolutist practices of Charles I, who had been disregarding the prerogatives of the island’s long-established parliamentary system. He organized a cavalry regiment, known as Ironsides, ahead of which he achieved important victories in the battles of Edgehill (1642) and Marston Moor (1644). He reorganized the Parliament army and in 1645 won another victory, this time at Naseby, also defeating the Scottish invasion of Preston.
